A Military Portrait of a Hussar

19th century
Description

A 19thC unframed oil on canvas of a Hussar in uniform. Thought to be French due to the frame construction and subject. Distressed but colourful and very decorative in its untoutched condition. A very faint signature or initial is in the bottom right hand. The uniform is interesting and requires more research as it appears to be rare. A painting entitled 'The Hussar' by B.Wirth a French artist dated 1867 shows a very similar format (see last thwo photos). Brass ring to the rear for wall hanging. Flaked and cracked paint but with no holes we feel it is best left as is ,reflecting its passage through time rather than restored.

55 cm by 38 cm by about 2.5 cm deep.

This nineteenth-century oil painting on canvas depicts a full-length portrait of a Hussar military officer wearing a blue braided dolman jacket and red trousers. The figure stands beside a dark grey stone pedestal holding a sabre sword, with a shako hat featuring a red and white plume resting on the top surface. The composition uses a dark grey monochromatic background offset by the bright red of the trousers and hat detailing. The canvas shows visible flaking and cracking paint across the surface, along with an untouched distressed finish and a faint signature in the bottom right corner. The piece measures 55 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep, fitted with a brass ring on the rear for wall hanging. It suits placement above a mantel in a gentleman's library or study, adding historic character to an interior without requiring restoration.

Military portraiture from this era features formal compositions depicting officers in regimental dress, complete with detailed uniforms, weaponry, and symbolic architectural props.

These artworks were typically executed using oil paints applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, occasionally mounted onto wooden panels.

Authentic pieces feature period-accurate military uniform details, natural paint craquelure, historical canvas weave texture, and age-appropriate wear along the margins.

Such artwork can be positioned above a mantelpiece or sideboard within a study, dining space, or library to provide historical texture and visual focus.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and high humidity, clean surface dust gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional restorer for canvas stabilization.
