A stick barometer is a meteorological instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure using a column of mercury. They gained widespread popularity and development throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras in Britain.

Traditional stick barometers typically feature a solid hardwood case, most commonly mahogany or oak, paired with a brass scale plate, glass tubing containing mercury, and often decorative wood veneers or stringing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails or screws, the patina of the wood, the engraving style on the ivory or brass scale, and the presence of mercury within the sealed glass tube.

An antique stick barometer functions well as a focal point in a traditional study, hallway, or living room, mounted on a neutral wall to highlight its vertical proportions and rich timber grain.

Preservation involves keeping the instrument away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood cracking, and handling the piece with extreme care due to the fragile glass tube and hazardous mercury content.
