This large antique French sculpture depicts a young boy playing two flutes while standing upon a naturalistic tree stump base. Signed by Auguste Moreau on the base, the nineteenth-century piece is crafted from patinated metal in a dark brown tone. The figure wears a draped loincloth and has textured hair, holding a flute in each hand up to his mouth. The bronze has a warm, well-preserved original finish with visible greenish highlights and highlights of lighter golden bronze on the contours of the body and base. Measuring 87 cm in height by 21 cm in width and 22 cm in depth, the sculpture weighs 11.9 kg. Suitable for display in a classical interior or a French chateau setting, this figurative artwork works well placed upon a mantelpiece, sideboard or display table. The substantial weight provides stability for standalone placement on flat horizontal surfaces. Collectors of nineteenth-century French decorative art and classical bronzes use such figures to add traditional character to formal reception rooms, studies or entrance halls, positioning them as focal points among period furnishings and antiques.

During the 19th century, French sculptors produced fine figurative bronze works using precise casting methods, often depicting classical, mythological, or romanticised figures with chemical patination.

Sculptures of this period were cast in copper alloy bronze using sand-casting or lost-wax techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details and patination to achieve deep colouration.

Authentic pieces display crisp surface detailing from original hand-chasing, artist signatures cast directly into the metal, and age-appropriate surface oxidation rather than modern spray finishes.

A dark bronze figure makes a compelling focal point when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble console table, or within a lit bookcase to contrast against contemporary surfaces.

Remove dust using a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface patina from air exposure and fingerprints.
