Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This nineteenth-century French Orientalist bronze sculpture depicts the king and knight Saladin standing on a round, stepped base with layered mouldings. The figure wears a helmet wrapped with a turban, detailed plate armour, chainmail leg coverings, boots with turned-up cuffs, and a draped mantle hanging from one shoulder. His right hand holds a gauntlet while his left hand grips the hilt of a dagger, and the metal shows a dark brown patinated finish with golden highlights catching the relief work on the armour and drapery. The statue stands 60 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. This piece brings historical character to a gentleman's library, study, or hallway, and sits securely upon a desk, a console table, or a mantelpiece as a focal point among traditional furnishings.

During the 19th century, European sculptors produced detailed bronzes inspired by Middle Eastern history, literature, and historic figures such as Saladin. These works often combined academic realism with elaborate costumes, intricate armour details, and dramatic drapery.

Most 19th-century figurative bronzes were cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine fine armour and drapery textures. Chemical patination was then applied using heat and acid treatments to create rich brown, dark, or gilded tones.

Authentic 19th-century bronzes typically display crisp hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate wear to the patina around raised areas, and seamless assembly joins. They often feature foundry stamps, signatures along the base, or weighted bases appropriate to period casting techniques.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood mantelpiece, a mahogany desk, or within a tailored bookcase to anchor a traditional or eclectic space. Surrounding the bronze with muted tones and understated natural materials allows its patinated surface texture and historical form to remain the focal point.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft natural-bristle brush for intricate details. Apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patina from moisture, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners or harsh solvents.
