Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Fireplace fenders emerged in the 18th century as a functional barrier to contain hot embers and ash, preventing them from damaging domestic flooring. Over time, they evolved into decorative focal points crafted from metals such as brass, iron, and steel.

Traditional fenders were predominantly cast, stamped, or assembled from solid brass, copper, and iron. Artisans utilised techniques such as casting, dovetailing, and riveted construction to create durable structures capable of withstanding high heat.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age-appropriate wear, hand-finished joints, heavier weight from solid metal construction, and period-specific manufacturing marks or patination rather than uniform modern machining.

A brass fender adds warmth and metallic contrast to a hearth, pairing effectively with both traditional tiled fireplaces and minimalist stone surrounds. It can be left to develop a natural patina or polished to a bright finish depending on the desired interior aesthetic.

Preserve brass by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a specialised metal cleaner only when necessary to remove heavy oxidation, taking care to avoid harsh abrasives that could damage the original surface texture.
