This late 19th century French bronze sculpture depicts a young Henry IV of France standing upon a square bronze plinth. The figure wears traditional Renaissance attire comprising a doublet with slashed sleeves, a ruffled collar, and a belted tunic with pleated skirting, while holding a sword hilt in his left hand and leaning against a textured tree trunk support. The dark brown patinated cast bears the stamp of the Parisian foundry F. Barbedienne alongside the Collas reduction mark. Measuring 49.5 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 23.5 cm deep, this piece makes a distinguished addition to a gentleman's library or study. Positioned on a mantelpiece or a display surface, the sculpture brings historical character to an interior scheme. The metal surface displays an even, polished dark brown finish across the youthful facial features, smooth limbs, and intricate folds of the historical garments. The standing posture directs the gaze toward the detailed period clothing and the naturalistic form of the stump support below. Maintenance requires only gentle dusting to preserve the patinated surface integrity within a domestic setting.

Foundries such as Barbedienne employed lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, frequently using the Achille Collas mechanical reduction pantograph to reproduce original models at scaled dimensions. Cast bronze pieces were meticulously cold-chased by hand to refine surface detail before applying chemical patinations to achieve warm brown hues.

Authentic castings typically bear a stamped foundry mark reading F. Barbedienne, Fondeur or F. Barbedienne, often accompanied by a circular Collas mechanical reduction seal. High-grade chasing work on clothing details, substantial weight, and consistent wear across the patinated finish further indicate period authenticity.

A patinated bronze sculpture functions as a focal point when placed on a stone fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood bookcase, or a contemporary console table. Juxtaposing the historical detail of the bronze against clean, minimalist modern backdrops creates strong visual balance.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush to reach detailed crevices. Avoid water, abrasive cleaners, and liquid chemical polishes, applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year to protect the original patina from oxidisation.

During the 19th century in France, the Renaissance Revival movement spurred interest in bronzes depicting historical royalty and military commanders, such as Henry IV. Major Parisian foundries produced these figurative sculptures to satisfy contemporary demand for historical portraiture and national heritage items.
