Antique Salt Bag by the Afshar Tribe, Woven in Soumak Work, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 2ft 3in x 2ft 2in (69 x 67cm).

Antique salt bag by the Afshar tribe woven in soumak work.

Circa 1880.

This is a superb example of Afshar Soumak work with a diamond Lattice design. The border is of the classic Afshar chevron design. The back is in plain weave madder red colour.

The salt bag is in excellent condition with very slight even wear to the face, the corners show some signs of tribal use and the back has some slight discolouration and some small black stains. I have not washed this bag and I am sure that it will improve with a gentle hand wash.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A salt bag, traditionally known as a namakdan, is a necked woven container crafted by nomadic Persian tribes to carry and protect rock salt used for preserving food and feeding livestock.

These textiles were hand-woven using hand-spun wool dyed with natural plant extracts, using the Soumak brocadery technique where supplementary decorative threads are wrapped over warp threads to create flat-weave patterns.

Authentic 19th-century salt bags demonstrate natural dye variation known as abrash, minor irregularities in hand-spun yarn, hand-bound selvedges, and specific tribal design motifs native to regions like Kerman.

Antique salt bags are frequently mounted in custom shadow-box frames or hung directly on walls as textural art pieces to complement minimalist, boho, or traditional interiors.

Keep antique wool textiles away from direct sunlight and damp environments, vacuum gently using a low-suction upholstery nozzle without a beater bar, and consult a professional textile restorer for washing.
