A Large Antique Bronze Mandalay Burmese Seated Buddha Circa 19th Century

19th century
Description

This is a striking image of a seated Buddha statue, crafted in a dark bronze. The figure is in a classic meditative pose with legs crossed and hands resting in the lap. Notably, the right hand reaches down to touch the ground in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, or “earth-touching gesture,” which symbolizes the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his awakening.

The statue’s robe is beautifully detailed, flowing naturally over the body, and the head features the traditional curled hair pattern seen in many depictions of the Buddha. It rests on a matching pedestal, giving it a grounded and reverent presence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mandalay style Buddha statues emerged in 19th-century Myanmar, featuring naturalistic facial proportions, draped robes with elaborate flowing folds, and distinct head curls topped with a smooth hairband and ushnisha.

These statues were predominantly cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, though lacquered wood and marble were also common, often finished with gilding or dark patination.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate patina, hand-chiselled details along the robe edges, original core casting residues inside hollow bases, and traditional features such as the bhumisparsha mudra hand gesture.

A bronze Buddha sculpture functions well as a focal point on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or dedicated plinth, pairing effectively with minimalist decor, natural timber, or dark academia aesthetics.

Keep the bronze in a stable dry environment away from excess humidity, dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, and avoid chemical polishes that strip the historical surface patina.
