Description

This is a very high quality 19th century French empire chest of drawers. Made from mahogany and has stunning bronze goddess faces, black fossil marble top and carved original painted feet. All of which show the quality of the piece and also make it hugely decorative. It is very handsome and is in great overall condition with minor blemishes consistent with age and use. The handles are neat with lion masks and all drawers open and close well. The marble is also original and has no major faults. The bronze decoration is very finely done and add a lot to the design of the chest. For me though the feet are one of my favourite details. They are carved timber with totally original worn black paint that gives the whole piece a stylish contrast. Possibly one of my favourite finds of late.

The French Empire style, prominent during the early 19th century under Napoleon, is characterised by classical symmetry, architectural proportions, dark mahogany veneers, and striking gilt-bronze or cast-bronze mounts drawing inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian motifs.

These pieces typically feature solid oak or pine carcases covered in flame mahogany veneers, topped with heavy slabs of natural marble such as fossil or grey marble. Construction incorporates traditional hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer boxes and mortise-and-tenon framing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetailing, old secondary woods like oak or pine behind the mahogany, hand-chased bronze or brass mounts secured with threaded pins rather than modern screws, and natural ageing of the timber and marble.

An antique Empire commode works well as a statement anchor piece in a modern bedroom or hallway, where its clean architectural lines and rich timber tones contrast effectively against neutral walls, complemented by minimalist lighting or contemporary abstract art above.

Protect mahogany surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and maintaining stable indoor humidity to prevent veneer cracking, applying quality beeswax periodically. Marble tops should be cleaned with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap, avoiding acidic substances like lemon or vinegar that etch the stone.
