Size: 5ft 9in x 10in (175 x 25cm).

A rare antique fragment of a piled Kyrgyz tent band, these are known locally as 'tegerich'.

2nd half 19th century.

This example is the end section of a much longer tent band, complete bands can be up to 8 meters (26ft) in length, the bands were used as internal decoration inside the yurt. The design has a repeat floral design in the central panel and a reciprocal outer border on each side, it is normal for one outer border to be wider than the other, the wide border would be placed at the top when the band was displayed inside the yurt. The colours are excellent with a very warm glow.

Good original condition with some wear and losses, there are some historic marks to the reverse. (We have not washed this item).

A Tegerich is a traditionally woven piled textile band created by Kyrgyz nomadic tribes during the 19th century to wrap around the interior wall frame of a yurt or felt tent. These decorative bands provided both structural tension and ornamental warmth inside traditional Central Asian dwellings.

They were hand-woven using hand-spun sheeps wool, often employing asymmetrical knots on a wool warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes were typically utilised to produce rich shades of red, madder, brown, and cream.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature natural dye variation, slight irregularities in hand-spun yarn, asymmetrical weaving density, and traditional geometric motifs specific to tribal lineages. Age-related wear, light oxidisation of dark wools, and fringe remnants are also indicators of authenticity.

A long tribal band fragment can be custom-framed or mounted vertically on a narrow wall space to serve as a tactile focal point. It can also be displayed along a staircase wall, hallway, or draped over a console table to add texture and historical depth.

Keep antique wool textiles away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should strictly be left to specialist textile conservators, and pieces should be vacuumed lightly through a mesh screen on low suction.
