This striking original oil on canvas painting by renowned French artist Raymond Picque (1926–1984) captures the atmospheric beauty of The Channel of Gravelines, Grand Fort-Philippe. Executed in Picque’s expressive, textural style, the piece evokes a windswept, industrial coastal scene where working boats glide across pale waters under a moody, overcast sky. Bold brushstrokes in slate grey, ochre, and midnight blue create depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the rugged charm of this northern French seaport.

Signed by the artist in the lower right corner, this painting exemplifies Picque’s post-impressionist approach and deep connection to maritime landscapes. A fine example of mid-20th century French coastal art, this work would appeal to collectors of marine painting, expressionist oil art, and regional French scenes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French mid-century abstract impressionism combines gestural brushwork and textured impasto techniques with atmospheric landscapes and coastal subjects, bridging traditional representation and modernist abstraction.

Artists during this era predominantly used oil paints applied thickly with palette knives or brushes onto stretched flax canvas, often framed in complementary timber moulding.

Authentic mid-century paintings often feature signature monograms, aged canvas backing, natural surface craquelure, and period-accurate stretcher bars or original gallery labels.

Displaying mid-century art above a neutral console table or sideboard creates an understated focal point, particularly when balanced alongside clean architectural lines and natural wood accents.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting gently with a soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals.
