George Atkinson, Gilded Silhouette of a Regency Lady

19th century
Description

This painted and finely gilded silhouette shows a well-endowed lady in an empire-line dress accessorised with a twisted necklace. Her hair has been painstakingly curled secured and twisted into a knot with curls falling on to the nape of her neck. The small ribbon bow on her corsage is a signature trait of George Atkinson’s profiles.

In fine condition, the silhouette is set in its original papier-mâché frame with convex glass and a small acorn hanger.

George Atkinson was born in Lincoln around 1785, married a girl from Durham and fathered six children. As a young man he began his artistic career working out on the road in partnership with other artists before settling in Brighton where he worked solo for about ten years. By the time of the 1841 Census, he and his family were living at 1 London Street, Hackney. By then his children were aged between 8 and 24 with two of the boys having followed in their father’s footsteps by becoming artists.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Regency gilded silhouettes are profile portraits rendered in dark pigment or cut paper, enhanced with delicate gold or bronze paint highlights to add dimension to hair, clothing, and jewellery.

These portraits typically feature ink, watercolour, or bronzing powder applied to paper or plaster, mounted behind glass within an oval brass bezel set into a papier-mache or ebonised wood rectangular frame topped with a decorative brass hanger.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit hand-applied bronzing or gilding detailing, natural aging or oxidisation on paper backgrounds, period-correct oval brass fittings, and characteristic brass hangers often shaped as acorns or oak leaves.

Display these small-scale artworks as part of a curated gallery wall alongside modern prints, or hang them individually in narrow architectural spaces like hallway nooks, alcoves, or above small consoles to create a refined focal point.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper warping; dust the exterior frame gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without applying liquid cleaners to the paper or brass fittings.
