19th-century English School, Portrait of a Bay Horse, Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This charming mid-19th-century English school oil painting depicts a bay horse in a stable.

The British aristocracy has always had a passion for equestrian activities, and during the 1860s, when this piece was produced, no country home was complete without a portrait of a beloved equine. Horses were significant members of the family, trusted, loyal, and characterful. As such, numerous painters, both established and provincial, were commissioned to produce portraits of this nature.

The modelling suggests that the artist was influenced by the works of John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865). Stylistically, it’s of good stock.

Housed in a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 39” x 30” / 99cm x 76cm

Year of creation: c. 1865

Provenance: Private collection, UK.

Condition: Cleaned. Revarnished. Canvas relined. Areas of fine and settled craquelure, as you would expect. The paint layer is stable. Frame in excellent condition.
