Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
Horses were significant members of the family, trusted, loyal, and characterful. As such, numerous painters, both established and provincial, were commissioned to produce portraits of this nature.

The modelling suggests that the artist was influenced by the works of John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865). Stylistically, it’s of good stock.
