Sebastiano del Piombo

Venetian-born and trained, perhaps by Giorgione, Sebastiano moved in 1511 to Rome, where he became a major portraitist and painter of religious subjects. He was a protégé of Michelangelo, who significantly influenced his art. His late style could be dark and sombre, and his figures have an almost clumsy force.

Sebastiano's early Venetian works resemble those by Giorgione. The Pope's banker, Agostino Chigi, one of the great patrons of the time, recognised his talent and brought him to Rome, where he also painted for patrons such as Pierfrancesco Borgherini.

It was in Rome that Sebastiano became one of the rare friends of Michelangelo and was drawn into his rivalry with Raphael. This culminated in Michelangelo providing designs for Sebastiano's Raising of Lazarus, to outshine its direct competitor, Raphael's 'Transfiguration'.

After Raphael's death, Sebastiano was the foremost painter in Rome and the first artist to return there (from Venice in 1529) after the 1527 Sack of Rome. The Pope rewarded his service by making him Keeper of the Papal Seal (hence his name the Piombo).

This early 19th-century oil painting on canvas depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman after Sebastiano del Piombo, executed in the High Renaissance Revival style. The subject wears a wreath in her hair, pearl earrings, a white blouse beneath a low-cut bodice, and holds a fur cape draped over her left shoulder against a plain background. The portrait is housed in an original, heavily carved warm gold giltwood Italian Florentine frame decorated with elaborate scrolling foliate patterns, mouldings, and deep relief carvings. The overall piece measures 89 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this Grand Regency artwork works well positioned above the mantel in a principal reception room or study. The chiaroscuro lighting and Renaissance drape costume provide a striking focal point on a living room wall. The sturdy frame incorporates detailed scrollwork corners and rich gilded finishes that complement traditional interiors.

During the 19th century, European artists frequently studied classical Renaissance masters by creating faithful oil painting reproductions. These works celebrated the painterly techniques, dramatic lighting, and idealised subject matter popularized by Italian Renaissance artists.

These works are executed using hand-mixed oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames from this period were typically constructed from carved timber or plaster, finished with layers of gold leaf or gilt wash.

Authentic period paintings show natural craquelure across the paint surface, oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and gentle wear to the gold leaf gilding on the frame. Hand-carved joints and period stretcher bars also indicate age.

Display the artwork as a central focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or modern sideboard to create contrast between historic detail and contemporary clean lines. Ensure accent lighting is adjusted to highlight the canvas without casting glare.

Dust the frame and canvas gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding any liquid cleaners or chemical polishes. Position the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas of high humidity to prevent cracking and canvas warp.
