Figural kitchenware, including animal-shaped herb choppers, gained popularity in 19th-century Europe as blacksmiths and metalworkers combined practical utility with whimsical design for domestic use.

These utensils typically feature forged steel blades for cutting edges, brass or copper rivets or accents, and wooden or metal handles designed for durability in food preparation.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged characteristics, tool marks, natural oxidation on the steel, and traditional joinery methods such as pinned handles rather than modern welding.

These pieces can be displayed on open shelving, mounted on kitchen walls as folk art, or placed on rustic wooden surfaces to add historical texture and character to contemporary spaces.

Keep items in dry environments to prevent active rust, clean gently with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to protect the metal surfaces without altering their patina.
