Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Carlton House desk is a specific type of writing table created in the late 18th century, characterised by a U-shaped superstructure wrapping around the back and sides of the writing surface. Named after the residence of the Prince of Wales, it incorporates small drawers, cupboards, and often a brass gallery.

These desks were traditionally crafted using fine hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, often decorated with ebony or tulipwood crossbanding. The writing surface typically features an inset leather sciver, complemented by brass handles, castors, and gallery railings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, original brass hardware, and hand-castors. Maker stamps, such as those from Gillows of Lancaster stamped on the drawer edges, further confirm period authenticity.

Position the desk centrally in a dedicated home office or study to showcase the finished back and curved superstructure. Pair the piece with modern minimalist lighting or neutral soft furnishings to contrast the warm timber tones.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean the timber using a natural beeswax polish applied along the grain, and care for the leather top with specialized leather conditioners.
