Description

A very impressive large antique Victorian mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of superb quality, it is extremely well made with lots of storage space inside the generous drawers. The lower drawer is built into the plinth base, so is extra deep. The drawers have lovely turned handles, the front edges are chamfered with applied panels and this has a beautifully moulded edge to the solid mahogany top.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompassing various revival movements with an emphasis on solid construction, practical domestic utility, and rich timber grains.

Pieces from this era typically feature dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, often constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer boxes and solid timber secondary woods.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, original brass or wooden hardware, and natural patination rather than artificial distressing.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced focal point that highlights the rich timber tones without overwhelming the room.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent splitting, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the finish.
