This Victorian gentleman's library bank of drawers dates from 1860 in the Victorian style. Made of mahogany and flame mahogany veneer with oak drawer linings, it presents a rich brown colour with a waxed finish. The tall, narrow chest stands on a solid plinth base with canted corners and a moulded top edge, and houses seven graduated horizontal drawers arranged vertically. Each drawer front displays book-matched symmetrical flame mahogany veneer, two turned wooden knob handles, and a central keyhole escutcheon. The piece measures 124.5 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep. Positioned in a home today, this compact unit serves practical storage needs in a study, dressing room, or hallway. The narrow proportions make it suitable for smaller spaces while providing substantial vertical storage across its seven tiers. The drawers accommodate files, stationery, accessories, or small garments, keeping surfaces tidy. Placed against a wall in a traditional or transitional interior, the rich wood tones and figured grain patterns add a warm, classic accent to the room.

Popularised during the 19th century, banks of drawers and tallboys were designed to provide maximum vertical storage while occupying minimal floor space in Victorian domestic interiors.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used mahogany, oak, and walnut, often applying decorative flame mahogany veneers to front panels over solid timber carcasses.

Authentic pieces from this period typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, solid wood linings, turned wooden or cast brass knobs, and period keyhole escutcheons.

A narrow bank of drawers fits well into narrow alcoves, hallways, or dressing areas, providing structured storage while contrasting with clean modern architectural lines.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading, and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically to preserve the finish.
