Cloisonne enamelwork involves creating designs on metal vessels using wire compartments, known as cloisons, which are filled with enamel paste and fired. The technique gained prominence in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties, producing highly intricate decorative objects.

Authentic pieces typically feature a base body of copper or bronze, with soldered flat metal wires forming the surface design cells. These cells are filled with vitreous enamel powders and fired at high temperatures before being polished smooth.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining the weight of the metal, the presence of hand-formed wirework irregularities, the depth and texture of the vitreous enamel, and natural signs of ageing such as micro-pitting and oxidation on the exposed bronze bases.

These vessels can be displayed as focal points on mantels, sideboards, or open shelving, pairing rich metallic tones and vibrant enamels with neutral backdrops to highlight their craftsmanship and historical depth.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to protect the delicate enamel and metal surfaces. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, or submerging the piece in water to prevent damage to the historic materials.
