Mahogany 19th Century Miniature Wellington Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

An Attractive Late 19th Century Mahogany Miniature, Or Childs, Wellington Chest, Having Rectangular Top Over Seven Drawers With Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Enclosed By Hinged Pilasters, Raised On Original Plinth Below.

Childs and Miniature size examples of the typical wellington chest of drawers are generally much rarer to find than their full size counterparts, particularly those that are constructed from a particularly unusual wood, or that are of much better quality than the norm like this particular example.

Constructed from a very good grade of mahogany it also boasts excellent quality drawer linings and therefore the drawers still run beautifully making it most fit for pupose indeed. It also boasts two hinged pilasters to hold the drawers in place, one of which contains the actual lock and the other which locks into place with a brass catch at the top.

This is an incredibly useful, functional and practical piece of furniture around the modern home of course, absolutely perfect for a whole host of places, including as a coffee table beside a settee or chair, as a bedside table, or even as an additional storage piece in a bedroom or office, offering great solutions.

The item comes with working lock and key and just like all the items which we offer for sale it has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled and trained, traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a general clean and tidy alomg with a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate use once sold and delivered.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow cabinet named after the First Duke of Wellington, introduced in the early 19th century. Its distinguishing feature is a vertical hinged locking flap or stile on one side that secures all drawers simultaneously when locked.

These chests were predominantly crafted from solid woods and veneers such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring brass locks, hinges, and escutcheons, alongside hand-turned timber or brass knob handles.

Authentic period pieces feature a functioning hinged side stile with a brass lock, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, secondary timber drawer linings such as pine or oak, and natural age-related wear to the timber finish.

A miniature version functions well placed atop a desk, sideboard, or console table, serving as a decorative surface accent while providing organised storage for jewellery, stationery, or small collectables.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent shrinkage or fading, dust regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain twice a year.
