The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by refined classical proportions, expert cabinet-making techniques, and a transition from heavy mahogany to lighter, more elegant designs influenced by designers like Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton.

Cabinet-makers predominantly utilised solid mahogany imported from the West Indies, often supplemented with secondary softwoods such as pine or oak for drawer linings and internal framing, paired with cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, handmade iron or brass fixings, natural timber shrinkage, and hand-planed secondary woods, rather than modern machine-cut joinery or uniform particle board.

An antique chest of drawers provides a grounded focal point in modern rooms, contrasting effectively against neutral plastered walls and minimalist decor while offering functional storage.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
