Description

An antique bow front chest of drawers showcasing a rich, deep colour and distinctive grain pattern. The chest features three long, graduating drawers, each fitted with brass backplates and drop handles. It is supported by out-swept bracket feet and finished with a shaped apron.

Height – 91cm / Width - 103cm / Depth - 64.5cm

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition overall, with typical signs of age and use. There is surface wear throughout, including age-related marks and scratches. The top shows some dents and marks, with loss to the moulding and splitting to one side. Despite these signs of age, the chest remains solid and sound.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid mahogany or fine mahogany veneers applied to secondary timbers like oak or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and turned or brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetails, secondary wood species, timber shrinkage, period-correct brass handles or escutcheons, and signs of hand-planing on the drawer bottoms and backboards.

A traditional mahogany chest provides warmth and structural contrast in modern spaces, functioning effectively as a statement storage piece topped with minimalist lamps or contemporary art.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the polished finish.
