CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout, with signs of age including surface wear, age-related marks, and scratches. There is fading to the top, likely from the previous presence of dresser drawers, along with additional marks to the top and scratches to the left side. One mis-matching drawer handle, historic replacement in similar style. Despite these signs of wear, the piece remains well-crafted and functional.

Edwardian furniture produced between 1901 and 1910 often drew inspiration from earlier eighteenth-century designs such as Chippendale and Hepplewhite. Pieces from this era typically feature refined proportions, high-quality mahogany timber, reeded pilasters, and decorative brass drop handles.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcasses. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while handles were cast in solid brass with swan-neck or bail designs.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, original brass lock mechanisms, and consistent natural patination on the timber. The backboards usually reveal hand-sawn secondary timber with signs of age and oxidisation.

Position the chest against a neutral backdrop such as off-white or soft grey walls to allow the warm timber tones to stand out. Complement the dark mahogany by topping it with contemporary ceramic vessels, a framed modern print, or a minimalist table lamp.
