Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most exquisite Meiji Period 1868-1912, cloisonne enamel bottle vase manufactured by the most highly revered enamel artist of the late 19th century, the imperial artist Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) . In this instance Yasuyuki has crafted a little jewel of a vase with extensive use of gold wires to the neck and shoulders as well as the underside borders, the shoulders decorated with imperial chrysanthemum amidst scrolling flora with both the neck and base decorated with geometric hanabishi shippo multicolour borders. The main globular body finely decorated with butterflies amidst scrolling foliage all worked in silver wires upon a vibrant turquoise ground, the neck and foot rims finished in gilt bronze with a silver tablet recessed beneath the base, artist signed Kyoto Namikawa. A truly scarce jewel of a vase by the luminary enameler of the period.

FAQs

Japanese cloisonne is a traditional decorative metalwork technique where enamel pastes are applied within compartments formed by soldered metal wires on a metallic base.

Traditional pieces typically utilise a copper, brass, or bronze body, silver or brass wires for the cell-work, and vitreous enamel pastes fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces from the Meiji era often feature extremely fine wirework, flawless enamel surfaces, distinct maker marks, and subtle tonal gradations reflecting master craftsmanship.

Position the vase as a solitary focal point on a mantelpiece or bookshelf, allowing its intricate patterns and vibrant colours to contrast against neutral contemporary surfaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive substances to protect the delicate enamel and metal wires.
