Description

Shahsavan Jajims from Azerbaijan in North-West Persia were usually made to tie up and store items in the tent or home. Their simple domestic function belied the superb workmanship that was employed to weave them and their delightful aesthetics. This piece is a great example. Woven with fine handspun wool and edible natural dyes in narrow horizontal stripes, the format is familiar. However, there is an additional element which separates this jajim from others. The numerous supplementary geometric motifs embroidered within the stripes are charming, and give the piece another dimension. It is a very clever device which is rarely seen and brings the whole composition to life. This is a beautiful example of Persian textile art, which is both very decorative and collectible. Despite its domestic function, it has survived in remarkable condition, even retaining its original selvages, perhaps an indication of how it has been cherished through the generations.
