FAQs

Hand-coloured engravings are traditional print works where lines were etched into a metal plate, printed on paper, and subsequently painted by hand using watercolour washes.

These historical works were typically produced using laid or wove paper, copper or steel printing plates, and traditional water-based or pigment-derived watercolours.

Authentic pieces exhibit plate indentation marks around the image border, subtle paper ageing, and microscopic dot patterns characteristic of hand application rather than modern digital pixelation.

Framing the artwork with a simple wood moulding and acid-free mount allows the historic piece to serve as a focal point within traditional or contemporary gallery walls.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight to prevent paper degradation and fading.
