Cloisonne is a traditional decorative technique where metal wire is soldered to a metal base to form compartments, which are then filled with enamel paste and fired. While practiced earlier, Japanese cloisonne reached its technical peak and international renown during the Meiji period.

Traditional cloisonne utilises a copper or brass body, fine silver or brass wires (known as ginbari or general wirework), and vitreous enamel made from silica, lead, and mineral oxides for colour, fired multiple times in a kiln.

Authentic antique pieces often exhibit fine, precise wirework, minor imperfections characteristic of hand-firing, polished rims, and counter-enamelling on the interior or base to prevent warping. Maker marks or signatures may also be found on the base.

These pieces function as striking focal points on mantelpieces, sideboards, or open shelving, contrasting cleanly against neutral backgrounds or complementing eclectic, maximalist interior schemes.

Preserve the enamel and metal wire by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical cleaners, which can damage the delicate vitreous surface and oxidise the metal elements.
