Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Empire style originated in France during the early 19th century, heavily influenced by neoclassical motifs from ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt. It was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to project imperial power, featuring dark woods, symmetrical proportions, and classical cast bronze mounts.

Empire furniture typically utilises dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or exotic veneers over a sturdy secondary wood frame. Construction often incorporates hand-carved details, classical joinery, and gilded bronze or brass mounts known as ormolu.

Authentic pieces from the early 19th century display period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved ornamentation, and traditional upholstery foundations such as horsehair stuffing. Examination of the wood patina, tool marks, and natural oxidisation of the metal mounts helps determine period accuracy.

An antique daybed functions effectively as a statement piece in a study, drawing room, or large hallway when paired with minimalist modern lighting and neutral walls. Mixing historical silhouettes with clean-lined contemporary textiles balances the dramatic classical weight of the furniture.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources, applying occasional traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes. Upholstery should be professionally cleaned using gentle vacuuming methods appropriate for historic textiles.
