Antique Georgian Copper Wine Cooler

English, early 19th century

A fine early 19th century English copper wine cooler, of attractive neoclassical form, raised on animal paw feet.

The piece was originally silver-plated, with much of the plating now rubbed and polished away to reveal the warm copper beneath, lending it a particularly handsome patina.

Good quality and of good weight, with sound structure and standing firmly.

Measurements: 19 cm wide x 19 cm deep x 20 cm high.

Condition: Good overall. Surface wear and rubbing to the plate as expected, but no structural issues.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a soft dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes to preserve the authentic historic patina.

Position the piece as a focal point on a sideboard or use it as a dramatic cachepot for a houseplant to introduce warmth and historic texture into a modern space.

Authentic items display hand-hammered marks, natural ageing with verdigris or patina, traditional dovetail or lap joints, and cast brass elements rather than modern machine stamping.

These pieces were typically hand-beaten from heavy-gauge copper or brass, featuring soldered seams, cast mounts, and occasionally fitted liners for ice and water retention.

Georgian wine coolers emerged in the 18th century as functional dining room accessories used by the elite to chill wine and champagne during lengthy meals.
