Description

A rare spoon from the early 17thc is this Charles 1 period "strawberry knop" latten spoon...it has the stamp and initials of the maker in the top of the "fig" shaped bowl , the makers mark is of a single spoon and initials RS...it shows signs of pitting as it was probably a metal detecting find and modern fertilizers do have an adverse effect on metalware over time, but it still is in very nice condition, for its great age and strawberry knop spoons in good condition are getting very hard to find.

English. C1630-40.

FAQs

The Stuart era encompasses the reigns of the early Stuart monarchs, characterised by distinct domestic items crafted from brass, latten, and pewter, reflecting the periods metallurgy techniques.

Latten is an historical copper-alloy similar to brass, widely utilised in pre-industrial England for fabricating durable domestic objects such as spoons, candlesticks, and flagons.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine casting flaws, hand-wrought characteristics, period-appropriate makers marks, and natural patination indicative of centuries of oxidation.

Historical artifacts integrate effectively into modern spaces when displayed within protective shadow boxes, on dedicated plate stands, or alongside minimalist decor to highlight their age.

Antique metalware should generally be preserved with its original surface intact; aggressive polishing removes valuable historical patina and should be avoided in favour of gentle dusting with a dry microfiber cloth.
