This is a type of portable cannon or swivel gun often mounted on merchant vessels or warships.
. They come in many different sizes from small examples like this one up to large carriage mounted versions. Small cannons or hand cannons were kept and passed down in familie and when times were hard they would also serve as a form of currency.
