After Samuel Hieronymus Grimm Original 18th Century Antique Watercolour Painting Outside Vineyard Rock, Buxted English Landscape

18th century
Description

Historical Description:

This highly faithful 18th-century watercolour closely follows the composition of Samuel Hieronymus Grimm’s 1785 depiction of Outside the Vineyard Rock in the Parish of Buxted, Sussex, a distinctive sandstone formation in Buxted Parish, East Sussex. The original is held in the British Library and was part of Grimm’s extensive work documenting English landscapes for antiquarian patrons.

This version is rendered with remarkable precision and subtle stylistic differences, suggesting it may have been created as a presentation copy for a patron, or possibly as a finished study intended for engraving or record. Elements such as the more refined shading, slight warming of tone, and enhanced clarity in the figures hint at a skilled hand reinterpreting Grimm’s composition rather than a direct tracing. A fine and rare piece of topographical art from the late 18th century, capturing both geological interest and the aesthetic ideals of its period.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, English watercolour art evolved from topographical drafting into an established fine art form, characterised by delicate wash techniques, line drawings in ink, and naturalistic landscape compositions.

Artists typically used hand-made rag paper, water-based pigments derived from natural minerals and plants, and iron gall or carbon inks applied with quill pens and fine hair brushes.

Authentic period watercolours often feature laid paper with visible chain lines or watermarks, age-appropriate toning, natural foxing, and precise ink line work beneath translucent washes.

Frame the artwork in a understated wood or gilded frame with a museum-grade matboard, and hang it as part of a gallery wall or above a console table alongside period ceramics or dark wood furniture.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight using UV-protective glass, maintain stable humidity levels to prevent mould growth, and ensure all framing materials are acid-free and conservation-grade.
