FAQs

Victorian furniture encompasses styles produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, generally characterised by robust construction, darker wood tones such as mahogany and walnut, and various revival influences drawing from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo periods.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers and veneers like mahogany, oak, and pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, turned wooden knob handles, and secondary softwood drawer linings.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut dovetailing, signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear on the timber, symmetry in the veneer patterns, original brass or wooden hardware, and traditional timber framing rather than modern fasteners.

This piece can serve as a contrasting focal point in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, pairing well with minimalist walls, neutral textiles, and modern lighting to balance historical weight with clean lines.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping and cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
