Eighteenth-century Italian school paintings typically reflect the artistic traditions following the Baroque period, often featuring dramatic chiaroscuro, classical mythological or religious subjects, and expressive figures rendered in rich, layered pigments.

These works were executed using oil paints composed of ground pigments mixed with linseed or walnut oil, applied onto hand-woven linen or hemp canvases that were secured to wooden stretcher frames with handmade tacks.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave density, hand- forged iron or early machine-cut stretchers, natural craquelure patterns in the oil paint layer, and pigment analysis under ultraviolet light to check for historical restorations.

An antique canvas can be displayed unframed or in a complementary minimalist contemporary frame to create a striking focal point, contrasting historical depth with clean modern architectural lines.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor relative humidity between 45-55 percent, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and periodically dusting the canvas surface with a soft, dry brush.
