This Victorian genre oil painting on board by William Douglas Almond dates from 1900 and depicts an eighteenth-century gentleman admiring his reflection in a mirror. The narrative figure study shows the subject wearing a mauve silk coat, white powdered wig, and white silk stockings, standing beside a Pembroke table holding porcelain. The artwork is presented under glass within a deep ebonised moulded black wooden frame complemented by a narrow gilded inner slip. Surface wear is visible on the dark wooden sections of the frame, showing minor scuffs and marks consistent with age. The piece measures 43 cm high and 28 cm wide, with exact dimensions of 43 cm by 28 cm. Placed above a sideboard or within a gentleman's library, this traditional framed artwork brings period character and narrative warmth to an interior. The compact proportions allow flexible wall placement in studies, hallways, or reception rooms where antique figurative oil paintings complement existing classic decor.

Genre painting is a style of art depicting scenes from ordinary life, historical re-enactments, or costume character studies, popularised in Western art from the 17th century onwards.

Artists frequently painted on prepared wooden or millboard panels using oil-based pigments, housed in layered moulding frames featuring painted wood and gilded interior slips.

Authentic pieces typically display natural surface craquelure, period-correct artist signatures, age-related oxidisation on the reverse panel, and original framing techniques.

Hang the framed artwork above a mahogany sideboard, integrate it into a curated gallery wall, or position it within a traditional library setting to add historical depth.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, lightly dust the frame with a dry soft cloth, and consult a professional conservator for varnish cleaning.
