English School Cottage and Horseman Scene C1800

19th century
Description

An early 19th C oil on canvass, typical rural pastoral scene with a woman greeting an man on horse at the door of the cottage and children playing in the stream. The picture is nicely painted and composed the light well used to draw the eye through the picture to the doorway.

Image size 12x16 inches Frame size 24 x 19.75 inches

Over all good condition given both the age and medium, there is a very old repair where the child is, it does not affect the image. For accuracy the paint has had a good deal of bitumen and so some unevenness to the surface in the darker area. Again it does not detract from the image.

Declaration

Timberhill Gallery has dated this Antique English Landscape Painting to the 1800s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The English School during this era focused on naturalistic depictions of rural countryside, traditional cottage architecture, and pastoral life, heavily influenced by Dutch Golden Age painters and early Romanticism.

Paintings from this period were typically executed in oil paints on woven linen canvas or timber panels, housed within hand-carved wood frames finished with water or oil gilding.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural age craquelure across the paint surface, historical varnish discolouration, period-correct canvas stretchers or wood joinery, and genuine oxidisation on the gilded frame.

Hang the artwork above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall setting to introduce rich historical texture and warm tones into modern or traditional room schemes.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the frame softly with a dry badger-hair brush and avoiding liquid cleaning agents on the paint surface.
