Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

18th-century portraiture frequently focused on realistic depictions of sitters wearing period attire, such as lace neckwear and bonnets. These works recorded social standing and personal identity before the advent of photography.

Artists traditionally used ground pigments suspended in linseed oil applied to hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were constructed from carved wood, often finished with gold leaf gilding or dark lacquer.

Authentic paintings of this era often display natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic wood stretcher bars, and hand-carved framing. The reverse of the canvas typically shows age-related darkening or oxidisation.

An antique portrait can serve as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or within a curated gallery wall. Pairing traditional oil art with contemporary furniture creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush rather than liquid cleaners or damp cloths.
