This French Provincial settee dates from the 1890 period and is constructed from walnut timber with upholstery and brass details. The piece measures 120 cm high, 170 cm wide, and 80 cm deep. The walnut frame displays carved scroll arms, turned stretchers with carved central motifs, and claw-and-ball feet. The seat and high back are upholstered in sage green and cream plaid fabric, finished along the borders with rows of brass studding. Inside a home today, this settee serves as seating in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The bench provides a sturdy seat supported by multiple turned legs connected by reinforced stretchers. The warm brown tone of the polished walnut contrasts with the muted green and cream check woollen fabric, while the brass studs add metallic texture to the edges.

Originating in seventeenth and eighteenth-century France, carved walnut settees were developed as multi-person seating options for formal reception rooms. Influenced by Louis XIII and Louis XIV styles, these pieces typically feature intricate hand-carved timber frameworks, stretchers, and scrolled armrests.

Authentic pieces were constructed using solid walnut timber known for its fine grain and durability. The upholstery incorporated natural materials such as horsehair, jute webbing, coil springs, and brass brass studding along the framework margins.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle asymmetry in hand-carved elements, and natural surface wear along the timber footings. The walnut wood often displays a deep natural patina developed through historical wax polishing.

A carved settee serves as a structural accent in modern entry halls, wide corridors, or at the foot of a bed. Pairing traditional carved timber frames with contemporary neutral walls or crisp architectural lines creates a refined juxtaposition.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax polish annually. Protect upholstered fabric from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and clean spills immediately using specialized fabric cleaner.
