Townscape Oil Painting of the Santa Maria Della Salute, Venice by Alfred Pollentine

19th century
For Sale by Benton Fine Art
Description

Alfred Pollentine

British, (1844-1910)

Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)91

Image size: 15 inches x 23 inches

Size including frame: 21.75 inches x 29.75 inches

Provenance: Colmore Galleries Ltd, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire

A pleasing view of the Santa Maria della Salute, Venice by Alfred Pollentine. This scene depicts the famous Santa Maria della Salute on the right with the Punta della Dogana and its distinctive sculpture further along. In the foreground to the left, can be seen a number of Sandolos whilst gondolas other and traditional sailing boats with colourful sails are also shown to the right.

Alfred William Pollentine was born in St Pancras, London on 26 August 1844, the son of William Pollentine, a carver gilder and picture dealer and Caroline Smith. After the death of his father in 1856, his mother married the artist Adam Barland (fl. 1843-1875). They lived at Upper Newbury Place and later Lillian Street in St Pancras.

Pollentine had established himself as an artist by the age of 16 and it is highly likely he was encouraged and tutored by Barland who influenced his style. He exhibited at the British Institute, Suffolk Street and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1861-1880. Initially, he painted landscape subjects similar to his stepfather and coastal scenes but later began to specialise in topographical views of Venice.

He married Emma Tautz on 13 September 1877 and together they lived at 51 Tollington Place, Islington with their children. By 1886, they had moved to 4 Chestnut Villas in Tottenham and by 1895 were living at 4 Liston Road. Whilst he spent most of his life in London, he did travel to France and Italy visiting the Amalfi Coast, Naples and Venice. He died on 16 March 1910 at Edmonton, aged 67.

Pollentine’s attention to detail and use of subtle palette help capture the atmosphere of one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Examples of his paintings can be found at the Herbert Art Gallery and the Laing Art Gallery.

Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears a label for the Colmore Galleries, a fine art dealers, framers and restorers based at 52 High Street, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire. It was established in 1973 and continued to operate until the early 2000’s.

Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A veduta is a highly detailed, large-scale painting or print of a cityscape or vista. The genre gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries among Grand Tour travellers acquiring depictions of iconic Venetian landmarks.

19th-century artists typically painted with oil pigments ground in linseed or walnut oil onto stretched linen canvas, often housed in heavy timber and plaster frames finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure across the paint layer, historic artist signatures or gallery labels, age-appropriate oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and period-correct gilding wear on the frame corners.

Hang a gilded landscape painting above a minimalist console table or mantelpiece to create a focal point, pairing rich historic textures with clean contemporary lines and targeted picture lighting.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and avoiding chemical cleaners on the painted canvas.
