1940 - 1960
Description

The Grand Canal, Venice, Original Oil Painting On Panel.

ITS HARD TO FIND ANY VENICE PAINTINGS FOR SALE ON THIS GRAND SCALE

Amazing finish to achieve a realistic canal of calm water, rippling in the sunlight.

This is a huge, outstanding quality example which would be very expensive to

paint today and not often painted on such a huge scale.

This immaculately presented work portrays a foggy morning with distant views along the tranquil

Grand Canal in Venice.

The attention to detail is phenomenal, and it is one of those paintings that appear to show something new each time it is viewed.

In particular the artist has perfectly captured the realistic glistening ripples in the calm early morning waters.

Finished with a generous impasto of oils providing more depth and realism.

The painting is mounted within its original, impressive, gilt moulded and cushioned frame.

CONDITION

Both the painting and the frame are offered in an overall superb original condition.

This traditional Italian oil painting on panel depicts a view of the Grand Canal in Venice during a foggy morning, showing architectural buildings lining the water with a generous impasto of oils creating depth and realism in the glistening ripples and atmospheric sky. The artwork is set within a warm gold original gilt moulded and cushioned frame, presenting a Grand Regency design vibe in superb original condition. The framed piece measures 99 cm high, 128 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Positioned above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the work offers a focal point in a home interior. The color palette incorporates warm gold tones on the frame and natural hues across the water, canal reflections, and architecture.

FAQs

Depictions of the Grand Canal in Venice gained prominent popularity during the 18th century as Vedute, or view paintings, collected by European travelers completing the Grand Tour as architectural mementos of Italian light and urban scenery.

Traditional fine art pieces utilize oil-based pigments layered over stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within carved timber frames finished with gilding, lacquer, or gold leaf applications.

Identification relies on examining the canvas backing for natural oxidisation, inspecting craquelure patterns in the paint layers, reviewing stretcher frame joinery, and analyzing signature brushwork styles.

Mount the artwork as a central focal point above a console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard, utilizing dedicated picture lighting to highlight the metallic tones of the frame against neutral walls.

Keep the canvas clean by dusting lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid displaying the artwork in direct sunlight, high humidity areas, or near direct heat sources to prevent cracking and fading.
