FAQs

An antique hand-coloured engraving is a printed image produced from an engraved metal plate, onto which watercolour pigment was meticulously applied by hand, common in scientific and natural history publications from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These historical plates were typically printed on rag-based laid or wove paper using copper or steel plates, and are frequently housed in period timber frames with glass protection.

Authenticity can be verified by examining the paper for plate marks (indentations left by the printing press), watermarks, and observing the ink under magnification to check for dot patterns characteristic of modern printing versus the continuous lines of engraving.

These pieces integrate well within traditional or eclectic settings, often hung in symmetrical pairs or gallery walls using acid-free mounts to preserve the paper while adding a layer of scholarly sophistication.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique prints should be displayed away from direct sunlight, framed using UV-protective glass, and kept in environments with stable humidity and temperature levels.
