This Victorian rosewood breakfront chiffonier is a large dark brown sideboard from 1880, measuring 138 cm high, 172 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. The breakfront silhouette incorporates an upper gallery shelf with a pierced design along the top edge, scrolling shelf supports, and carved corbels. Four doors enclose shelved interiors, featuring central panelled cupboard doors alongside outer doors with intricate pierced fretwork over light blue fabric backing. The construction utilizes rosewood, fabric, and brass hardware, displaying normal scuffs and marks commensurate with age, alongside a polished finish highlighting the wood grain figuring. This piece provides storage and display space suitable for a dining room, hallway, or living area.

FAQs

A Victorian breakfront chiffonier is a 19th-century storage cabinet featuring a central section that extends further forward than the outer wings. Typically designed for dining or drawing rooms, these units combine cupboard storage with a shallow raised gallery shelf above the main counter.

Craftsmen during the Victorian period constructed high-grade chiffoniers using solid hardwoods and decorative veneers such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Interior linings often incorporated pine or oak, while cabinet doors featured silk or fabric backings behind pierced fretwork or brass grilles.

Authentic pieces feature distinct visual hallmarks, including rich figure and dark graining characteristic of Dalbergia rosewood species. Examination of construction reveals hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast brass locks, hand-carved decorative corbels, and solid wood backboard paneling.

Position the cabinet as a focal storage piece along a main wall in a hallway, dining space, or living room. Contrast the dark wood tones and detailed fretwork by anchoring the space with neutral paint finishes, simple contemporary ceramics, or minimal wall art above the upper gallery shelf.

Maintain rosewood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and retain the original finish patina.
