Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Victorian chest of drawers by Jas Shoolbred comes in honey pine faux oak with stencilling and painted border lining, showing losses to the paintwork and a stamp on the rear. The piece has a low top gallery, two short drawers over two long drawers, and brass drop handles. Standing at 87 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, it provides storage for everyday items in a bedroom, living room, or hallway. Alongside it sits an armchair upholstered in patterned grey fabric with turned wooden legs on castors, set against a plain plaster wall and a grey wood plank floor.

FAQs

During the late nineteenth century, British cabinetmakers such as James Shoolbred & Co. produced painted and faux-grain pine furniture as a lighter, decorative alternative to heavy dark mahogany. These pieces frequently featured classical proportions combined with painted line borders or stencil work.

Chests from this period were predominantly constructed from solid pine or ash, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast brass drop handles, and decorative surface paint or faux-inlay stringing.

Authentic pieces often feature a stamped metal makers plate or a stamped impression on the top edge of a drawer, reading Jas Shoolbred & Co. alongside period-accurate hardware and drawer construction.

A painted Victorian chest adds warmth to neutral modern bedrooms or hallways. Pairing honey-toned pine with contemporary abstract artwork or structured ceramic vessels creates a balanced visual contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear, un-tinted furniture wax once a year. Avoid chemical sprays, excessive moisture, and placement direct to heat sources to prevent cracking.
