The French Empire style flourished during the early 19th century under Napoleon Bonaparte, drawing heavy inspiration from the classical civilisations of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt.

Empire furniture typically utilises dense tropical hardwoods like mahogany, frequently adorned with gilt bronze or brass mounts, stringing, and classical architectural motifs such as columns and pilasters.

Authentic pieces often feature solid construction methods of the period, fire-gilt or cast brass mounts, flame mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, and hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers.

Pairing classical neoclassical furniture with minimalist or contemporary surroundings creates a striking contrast that highlights the rich timber grain and metallic detailing as a focal point.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood.
