FAQs

A Victorian plate back dresser is a traditional piece of storage furniture consisting of a lower sideboard or drawer base combined with an open, tiered upper rack designed to display plates and tableware.

19th-century dressers were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, pine, and mahogany, often featuring solid brass handles and hand-cut dovetail drawer joints.

Authentic period dressers display hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail joinery, hand-forged or cast brass hardware showing natural oxidisation, and age-appropriate wear on working areas like drawer runners.

A period dresser can be styled in modern dining rooms or open-plan kitchens by pairing the timber with neutral wall colours, minimalist ceramics, or contemporary glassware to contrast with the historical joinery.

Preserve antique oak by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol sprays and direct heat sources.
