FAQs

Victorian furniture from the 1880s reflects heavy industrialisation combined with traditional craftsmanship, often featuring robust timbers like pitch pine, turned wooden handles, and practical, utilitarian designs suited for growing domestic households.

These pieces were constructed using solid native and imported timbers such as pitch pine, employing hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer carcases, tongue-and-groove drawer linings, and turned wooden knob handles fixed securely through the drawer fronts.

Authenticity is identified through construction characteristics including hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing, square-headed or early machine-made iron screws, and natural timber oxidisation resulting in a deep amber patina over the grain.

An antique pine chest can serve as a grounding focal point in modern minimalist or rustic spaces, offering textural warmth and natural grain contrast against neutral walls and streamlined contemporary furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber bleaching, and periodically nourishing the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
