Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian harbour painting, with boats, fishermen and their families, signed by Edward Brown RBA, circa 1900, in excellent condition. Edward Brown was an accomplished artist predominately of water colours he painted around the early 1900s. This study is of fisher folk with their boats on a hazy afternoon. The artist leads the eye in from the left-hand side we see a woman cuddling a baby, whilst she chats to a busy man and child, the light catches her hair and the profile of the girl. the tide is obviously out as the boat with drying nets is beached, to the right we see people gazing out to sea and a boat coming in to land. He captures the mood in muted colours, especially the wet sand and the light reflecting on the sea on the horizon. The watercolour is pleasing to view and a subject that one would not tire of viewing, as the more one looks, the more detail you spot.
