Antique Afghan Baluch Kilim, Woven in Two Parts, Chevron Design, Circa 1920.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 9ft 10in x 5ft 9in (300 x 175cm).

Antique Afghan Baluch kilim with banded chevron design.

Circa 1920.

The kilim is a traditional tribal Baluch kilim, woven on a narrow loom in two strips which are then stitched together. This example has bands of chevrons in indigo blue and madder red, separated by fine bands of weft work decoration. The long kilim ends are of a stripe design.

Good original condition with some wear, (reflected in the price).

This kilim is suitable for normal domestic use, I would suggest a good underlay is used on a hard floor

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch kilims are flat-woven wool textiles created by nomadic Baluch tribes in the border regions of Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. They are recognised for dark, rich colour palettes, geometric patterns, and durable flatweave construction.

These textiles are hand-woven using pure hand-spun sheep wool on narrow portable looms. Larger pieces are frequently woven in two separate narrow panels and stitched together along a central seam.

Authentic pieces feature flatweave slit-weave techniques, naturally dyed wool yarns, subtle abrash colour variations, and often a visible central joining seam where two loom widths meet.

A woven kilim adds texture and graphic interest when laid over hardwood floors or layered atop neutral natural-fibre carpets. Its bold geometric motifs also make it suitable for display as a wall tapestry.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid pulling loose threads. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and consult a professional rug restorer for specialized cleaning.
