A suzani is a type of embroidered tribal textile traditionally made in Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, often crafted by brides as part of their dowry.

Traditional suzanis are typically embroidered with silk or cotton threads on a cotton or linen foundation, utilising stitches such as the tambour hook, chain stitch, or basma stitch.

Authentic antique pieces generally feature hand-spun foundational fabrics, natural vegetable-derived dyes showing subtle tonal variations, and hand-stitched irregularities that distinguish them from modern machine-made reproductions.

An antique suzani can be mounted on a wall as a focal textile artwork or draped over a large piece of furniture to introduce rich colour, texture, and pattern into a modern living space.

Antique textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and professionally mounted using archival methods without adhesive contact to protect the fragile historic fibres.
