Grand Tour Alabaster Seated Nymph

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Cella

Very rare, well carved 19th century Grand Tour alabaster library sculpture of the Seated Nymph from the group known as The Invitation to the Dance, one of the most light-hearted groups from classical Hellenistic antiquity. Paired with a nude Faun with Clappers who invites her to dance. Portrayed partially draped, reaching for her outsretched foot and seated on a rocky outcrop, this most closely resembles the example from the Medici Collection in the Uffizi in Florence and the Nymph in the Museo Archeologico in Naples. Good example Italian, probably Florence, circa 1870.
